Transforming Nutrition at 59: Sally Gunnell's Journey to Balance
Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell, a former athlete known for her discipline, faced a familiar challenge when she reached her 50s: her fitness routine needed a refresh. With exercise dialed in, she turned her attention to nutrition, seeking a balanced approach to her post-athletic life.
Gunnell's previous routine, as she describes, was a common pattern among many women. Skipping breakfast, opting for light lunches, and then snacking throughout the day, she found herself reaching for whole bags of nuts and indulging in a glass of wine and crisps during dinner. Despite her efforts, she wasn't getting the necessary nourishment, lacking sufficient vegetables, fruits, proteins, and proper calories.
The turning point came when she prioritized protein at every meal. Instead of fixating on calories, she focused on protein sources. Post-workout, a smoothie with protein powder, kefir, berries, chia seeds, and walnuts became her go-to. Other days, eggs or porridge with added protein kept her satisfied and fuller for longer, curbing the constant snacking. This shift in mindset was crucial, as Gunnell emphasizes the importance of moderation over all-or-nothing diets.
Her new approach is about sustainable change, building habits that can be maintained. She encourages clients in her Life’s Hurdle program to embrace a realistic, balanced lifestyle. Perfection, she asserts, is unattainable and unsustainable. Enjoying treats like crisps, chocolate, and a glass of wine in moderation is key. This mindset shift is what ultimately led to her feeling satisfied, energized, and in control of her eating habits.
Gunnell's journey highlights the importance of a holistic approach to health, where exercise and nutrition are intertwined with a positive mindset. Her upcoming podcast series, Life’s Hurdles, starting June 25, promises to delve deeper into these insights, offering a valuable resource for anyone seeking a balanced and sustainable lifestyle.
