The recent surge in light rail ridership in Seattle has propelled Sound Transit to the top of the U.S. light rail system rankings, a remarkable feat considering the city's 15th-largest metropolitan population. This achievement is all the more impressive when compared to larger American cities like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Phoenix, Inland Empire, and Detroit, which have larger populations but significantly lower transit ridership. The key to Seattle's success lies in its strategic expansion of the 2 Line, which has connected Bellevue and Seattle across Lake Washington, resulting in a 44% increase in ridership in April alone. This expansion has not only boosted ridership but also positioned Sound Transit as the most-ridden light rail system in the nation, surpassing peers like Los Angeles, Boston, and San Diego. The next major rail expansions are not slated until the 2030s, but the system is expected to continue growing, with the Sound Transit 3 measure promising to serve 650,000 daily riders by the 2040s. However, the agency has recently scaled back plans due to a budgetary crisis, which could impact future growth. Despite this, the revised plan still projects attracting 92% of the promised ridership, just shy of 600,000 daily riders. This would catapult Seattle to second in the nation behind New York City, but the DC Metro could likely see rail ridership growth to keep ahead. The only other U.S. transit system embarked on rail expansions as ambitious as Seattle's ST3 build out is Los Angeles with its Measure M, which could get a famously car-oriented city on the path of transit embrace. However, Seattle is currently adding riders much faster than LA. The next city Seattle could surpass in rail ridership is San Francisco, with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) reporting daily ridership around 200,000. Even though extensions are not expected to open until the mid-2030s, the network effects, population growth, greater public awareness, and shifting travel habits are likely to continue boosting ridership in the interim period. The future looks bright for Seattle's light rail system, but the journey to 600,000 daily riders is not without challenges. The key will be in maintaining momentum and addressing budgetary constraints to ensure the system continues to thrive and serve its growing population.
